THE GREAT APOSTASY
During an apostasy, God’s authority is absent from the earth. After Jesus resurrected and ascended into heaven, His disciples knew He would one day return, as He had said. However, the Apostle Paul taught that the Church Jesus established would fall away before Christ comes again:
2 Thessalonians 2: 3 – Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there comes a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
This apostasy occurred in the centuries after Jesus’ original Apostles, who held His priesthood authority, died or were killed.
The Restoration of Christ’s Gospel
While God knew that His priesthood authority, prophets, and the full gospel of Jesus Christ would be gone from the earth for a time, He also made a promise that they would one day be re-established. Peter in the New Testament promised that in the last days, there would come “the times of restitution [or restoration] of all things” (Acts 3:21). This restoration of Jesus’s gospel began in 1820 when God called the Prophet Joseph Smith and restored His priesthood authority on the earth. A living prophet has been leading The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since it was organized on April 6th, 1830.
Jesus’s Church Restored was foretold in the bible.
The coming Fourth of the Book of Mormon
The prophet Ezekiel revealed that the writings of the descendants of Judah (the Bible) and the writings of the descendants of Joseph (the Book of Mormon) would one day come together to unify His people in righteousness.
Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand” (see Ezekiel 37:16–17).
Stick represents the book, the history of the inhabitants.
One stick: Judah, The Holy Bible
Another stick, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim.
Both books teach us about God and Jesus and how we can live with them again.
On April 6th, 1830, the Church was restored after the Great Apostasy, just as 2 Thessalonians 2:3 had prophesied.
Apostasy
An Overview
When individuals or groups of people turn away from the principles of the gospel, they are in a state of apostasy.
One example is the Great Apostasy, which occurred after the Savior established His Church. After the deaths of the Savior and His Apostles, men corrupted the principles of the gospel and made unauthorized changes in church organization and priesthood ordinances. Because of this widespread apostasy, the Lord withdrew the authority of the priesthood from the earth. This apostasy lasted until Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son appeared to Joseph Smith in 1820 and initiated the Restoration of the fulness of the gospel.
Latter-day Saints believe that, through the priesthood conferred to Joseph Smith by the ministering of angels, the authority to act in God’s name was brought back to the earth. This is “restored,” not “reformed,” Christianity. Their belief in a restored Christianity helps explain why Latter-day Saint converts, from the 1830s to the present, converted from other Christian denominations. None of these converts thought they were leaving Christianity; they are simply grateful to learn about, and become part of, the restored Church of Jesus Christ, which they believe offers a more complete and rich Christian Church spiritually, organizationally, and doctrinal.
During the Great Apostasy, people were without divine direction from living prophets. Many churches were established, but they did not have priesthood power to lead people to the accurate knowledge of God the Father and Jesus Christ. Parts of the holy scriptures were corrupted or lost, and no one had the authority to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost or perform other priesthood ordinances.
We now live in a time when the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored. But unlike the Church in times past, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will not be overcome by general apostasy. The scriptures teach the Church will never again be destroyed (see Doctrine and Covenants 138:44, also Daniel 2:44.)
Although there will not be another general apostasy from the truth, we must each guard against personal apostasy by keeping covenants, obeying the commandments, following Church leaders, partaking of the sacrament, and constantly strengthening our testimonies through daily scripture study, prayer, and service.

The date I gave for the start of the great Apostasy was my choice. I picked the most suitable date based on the historical record of the Apostles’ martyrdom. My research led me to the year 67 A.D. It is only correct if the history dates are correct. As I mentioned, these dates are close, but if they are off, it wouldn’t be by much.
Let’s pray daily so that we are not surprised. Starting on January 20th, 2025, I am starting a channel on YouTube and Rumble.com.
